Instructions for
Spawn-Dowels

One of the simplest method for cultivation of mushrooms in your garden is the inoculation of woodlogs and stumps wiht spawn-dowels. For any questions about mushroom cultivation feel free to send an E-mail: support@mrcashop.org.

Recommended materials:

Wood logs or stumps
Saw
Tub for soaking
Drilling machine / 9mm drill
Spawn dowels
Gunnysacks (jute material)

General procedure:

The inoculation of logs and stumps is possible year round but be sure no frost will occur during colonisation. Depending on the mushroom species and wood kind, mushrooms will fruit for several seasons (until all nutrients from the wood are consumed) on dead wood.

Wood quality is essential for a good harvest! After felling the logs are stored in a dry location for a period of 4-5 weeks and are then prepared the following way:

Soak the log in a tub containing water for about 3 days, try to drown it totally. Afterwards place it on a clean place and let it dry for 1-2 days. Logs (including bark ) with a diameter of 20-30 cm and 50-80 cm length are most suitable.

The dowels should be used immediately after receipt , but can be stored for several weeks in a refrigerater( 2-4° celsius).

Immediatelly bevor inoculation cut off 2cm from the cutting sides of the log and throw it away. This ensures that no competitor mould spores are contaminating your efforts. Then use a 9mm drill and dril 100 holes (3-4 cm deep) longitudinally down the axis of the log (approx. 10 cm apart). Try to avoid overheating of the driller because this affects wood quality. Insert the plugs by hand and pound them in using a hammer . Clean your hands and tools before inoculation. For better results, please also inoculate the cuttings!

IMPORTANT: SPRING CLEAN AND DESINFECT YOUR HANDS AND TOOLS TO MINIMIZE CONTAMINATION RISK!

Spawn - run:

For the colonisation period the logs are wrapped in wet gunnysacks and placed in a shady area in the garden or in the cellar at spawn run temperature. Colonisation is complete as soon as mycelium is covering the end sides fully. This will take - according to species - at least 10 weeks. Please keep the gunnysacks wet during this phase. If you place the wood logs during spwan run indoor (cellar) daily fresh air exchange is needfully.

Positioning in the garden for fruiting and further cultivation tips:

As soon as colonisation is complete the logs are buried upright 15 cm deep in the soil in a shady location in your garden. If you want to use them on your balcony put he logs in flowerpots containing humus soil. Keep the soil and the logs wet by spraying water on it. Fruitbodies will occur as soon as needed fruiting temperature is achieved.

Special tips for Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) Spawn-dowels:

Shiitake don´t need contact with soil. The plugs also can also be ajared and fixed at a fence. We recommend to use wood logs (wtih bark) of about 70 - 120 cm length and a diameter of about 15 - 20 cm.

To start the fruit cropping prepare the logs as following: Dunk them in cold water for approx. 24 h (the log should be complete coverd with water). The best yield can be made if the water has a ph value of 5 (to adjust the ph value use 0,1 % N hydrochloride). After dunking pitch the log for 3 times on a stone plate. Now it takes 10-14 days fort he pins (mini mushrooms) to appear. After harvesting, let the log rest for 6 weeks then you can dunk and pitch it again!

Snail defense:

Snails love mushrooms even more than humans do. For preventing snails eating all your fruitbodies , build a snail fence around the log. Do not use any chemical defenses as the toxins can be absorbed by the mushroom mycelium and make your feast inedible!

Pro - tipp: To protect the logs against frost just wrap them in gunnysacks during winter. In spring time, sacks are removed and the logs are sprayed with water.

Further possible usage of fruiting bodies:

It is possible to cultivate fresh mushroom mycelium by using your self growen mushrooms. Generlly you can germinate all kinds of mushrooms form spores. For very slow growing wood habitant mushrooms we recommend cloning. Learn more about and read our detailed instructions:
